Digital Library Collections By Subject: Encyclopedias and Dictionaries

Scope: These are free, full-text works which identify themselves by their title or by their content as an encycolopedia or a dictionary or are organized in the traditional fashion of an encyclopedia or dictionary, typically, an alphabetic arrangement by topic or through a classification scheme.

• The Canadian Encyclopedia Online (McClelland & Stewart). Online edition sponsored by Histor!ca). Searchable full-text electronic edition of the hardcopy/CD-ROM title first published by Hurtig Publishers in 1985.
• Dictionary of Canadian Biography. Launched on October 24, 2003, this Web-based version of the hardcopy reference work is a collaboration between the University of Toronto, who originally and continue to  publish this multivolume work, Université Laval, the Department of Canadian Heritage, and Library and Archives Canada. • Dictionary of Newfoundland English Online. Edited by G.M. Story, W.J. Kirwin and J.D.A. Widdowson. 2nd ed. (University of Toronto Press, 1990). Online edition hosted by Newfoundland and Labrador Heritage Web Site Project. Text is searchable.
• Historical Directories Searchable Digital Library: A University of Leicester Project. Leicester, England: University of Leicester. Summary: " ... digital library of local and trade directories for England and Wales, from 1750 to 1919. It contains high quality reproductions of comparatively rare books, essential tools for research into local and genealogical history." Search features include by location, decade or keyword. • Meyers Konversations-Lexikon. Temmenhausen, Germany: Christian Aschoff. Digital facsimile of the 14th edition (1888-1889) of a 16-volume encyclopedia published in Leipzig, Germany. The encyclopedia can be browsed or keyword searched, and the encyclopedia can be viewed as either  HTML pages or in black and white digital facsimile. Date accessed: 2004-03-27. • Progressive Men of the State of Montana. Missoula, MT: Maureen and Mike Mansfield Library, University of Montana Libraries, 2004. Browsable and searchable digital facsimile of the edition published by A.W. Bowen & Co., Chicago, IL, ca.1903,  containing biographies of over 2,500 men and women from Montana, USA.
